About Me
My name is Ben Watson and I am a software developer from Leeds with a passion for open source and DevOps.
I am currently studying a degree in computer science at the University of Huddersfield. During my studies I have worked at various companies in Leeds, freelanced and nominated to attend Trivago Tech Camp.
Hobbies
I like to spend some of my time working on projects I think are cool. You can see some of the stuff I’ve been building on my github.
I also enjoy playing card games, video games and try play pool every so often. I love Quentin Tarantino and Stanley Kubrick films.
Want to discuss a project with me? Then please drop me a message.
Projects
I mainly work with PHP however, I have also built some personal projects using Node and Go.
Final Year Project
University final year project which performs phone calls on users behalf using TTS and various other components.
Work
Ascensor - Fullstack Developer
09/2014 – 08/2017At Ascensor I worked with many clients, both large and small. One of my greatest achievements while working there was architect and implementing a training and management software solution for a large PLC client. While working at Ascensor I mainly did backend development using Laravel but would also keep myself familiar with frontend and website performance optimisation.
Freelancer - Developer & Technical Adviser
09/2014For the past few months I’ve been working as a freelancer for various companies mainly working on PHP ecommerce platforms built using Laravel and Magento. I’ve also be responsible for managing and maintaining AWS infrastructure and improving security for websites along with increasing their page speed performance.
Trivago - Tech Camp Participant
09/2014 – 08/2017In September I worked at Trivago’s headquarters in Germany for two weeks. To earn my place at Trivago Tech Camp I had to write a data pipeline using Node.js and demonstrate my knowledge of software design and the ability to write software that is easy to manage and extend in the future.
While there me and my team built a tool in go and Express that allowed teams to write their articles using markdown using Google docs, commit and have it automatically export to a HTML format via a pipeline that made use of our application.
Parallax - Backend Developer
10/2018At parallax I worked as a backend developer mainly working with Laravel applications but also had some experience dealing with infrastructure, Typescript, Vue, Svelte and Ionic apps.
While there I worked on various large client projects and got stuck in to many mobile apps. I also spent some of my time learning how their CI/CD processes worked.
